East Stroudsburg, PA is a fabulous small town, population about 10,000, nestled in northeastern Pennsylvania in the Poconos Region and anear the Delaware Water Gap Nation Park. (Precise coordinates: 41°0'5?N & 75°10'48?W.

As someone who has been to many parts of the world, I'm happy to say that East Stroudsburg is a beautiful and a pleasant place to live. I am thrilled by the large and numerous trees, the numerous city parks , the lively downtown, the diversity and quality of its restaurants, the security and peacefulness of the community, and the friendliness of the people.

One of my favorite things about East Stroudsburg is the proximity to the Delaware Water Gap National Park. Though once polluted, in recent decades it has been largely restored to a clean and biologically diverse wonder. Many species of fish live in the river, including bass, pike, trout, perch, walleye and carp.

East Stroudsburg is a beautiful place to live, especially when it's not winter. Abundant wild flowers line the roads and many species of wild birds inhabit the area, including blackbird, Blue Jays, and various hawks. And recently, I had the inspiring and even breath-taking experience of watching a large American Eagle moth dine on fish in the Delaware River.

Perhaps most spectacular of all the beautiful sights in this area are the sunsets. I don't know why - perhaps it's the interaction of Pocono Mountains with northern winds - but this area is frequently blessed with rich and varied cloud formations sprinkled across an open sky that leads to stunning colors and dazzling light effects in the evening. A sunset viewed from the shores of nearby Lake Wallenpaupack or one of the local lakes or even my own front yard can often be too much for words. Come visit us and see for yourself!

Originally known as "Dansbury", East Stroudsburg was renamed for geographic reasons when the Delaware, Lackawanna, and Western Railroad opened a station in town. The Borough of East Stroudsburg was created by an Act of the Pennsylvania State Legislature and incorporated as a Borough in 1870.  Our municipality includes an area of approximately 2.5 square miles and a resident population of over 10,000. Its population has shown a slow, steady escalation from 2,648 in 1900 to 3,330 in 1910 to 6,404 in 1940 to 9,888 in 2000, according to census reports. Not including university students on campus.

East Stroudsburg University is one of fourteen institutions in the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education and the only one located in the Pocono Mountains .

East Stroudsburg Normal School opened its doors on September 4, 1893.  A faculty of fifteen greeted a group of 320 students who had entered the two-year programs in Elementary and Science Education.  The Normal School was privately owned until ownership was transferred to the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania in 1920.

In 1927, the right to confer the degrees of Bachelor of Science in Education and Bachelor of Science in Health Education was granted, and the School's name then became the State Teachers College at East Stroudsburg . In 1960, the College's name was changed to East Stroudsburg State College.  In 1962, the College received the right to confer graduate degrees and the University awarded its first Graduate degrees in 1964.  At that time the Graduate School enrollment was 194, it is now over 1,000.

The College achieved university status and officially became East Stroudsburg University on July 1, 1983. Today there are 61 campus buildings located on 213 acres in the East Stroudsburg community.  There are nine residence halls housing 2200 students, and a 1,000 seat dining room on campus.  The University faculty totals 274 while another 382 employees make up the management and non-instructional staff.  ESU is a comprehensive university offering an array of undergraduate and graduate degrees.

In spite of being a small town, East Stroudsburg, has a lot of sophistication. Both the Performing Arts Center and East Stroudsburg University bring a lot of culture into town, but there is plenty of local musical and artistic talent, along with outstanding music instruction and numerous performance opportunities for students. Music seems to be taken pretty seriously in East Stroudsburg, along with other arts.
